Peptide Importation in Australia

Legal and regulatory considerations for importing peptides into Australia.

Last updated: 31 March 2026

Importing research peptides

Peptides labelled for research use may be imported into Australia for research purposes. The importer must not supply them for human therapeutic use. Personal importation for research is generally permissible under defined conditions.

Always verify with current TGA guidance before importing.

Importing therapeutic peptides

Importing an unapproved therapeutic peptide is generally not lawful unless it falls under Special Access Scheme, Authorised Prescriber pathway, or clinical trial frameworks. A doctor and the TGA must approve importation for therapeutic use.

Self-importation of unapproved therapeutics is generally prohibited.

Customs clearance

Imported goods pass through Australian customs. Customs will refer peptides to the TGA for clearance. The TGA assesses whether the import is lawful and appropriate.

Delays are common. Allow extra time for customs processing.

Required documentation

Import declarations should clearly state the research use. COAs and batch documentation should accompany shipments. Keep records of the import for regulatory purposes.

Proper documentation facilitates customs clearance and regulatory compliance.
